Types of Weight Loss Surgery offered at MCH

At Medical Center Hospital Bariatric Surgery Clinic, we specialize in the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (LAGB), the sleeve gastrectomy, and the laparoscopic gastric bypass procedures. Weight loss surgery, or bariatric surgery, has been proven to result in sustained, long-term weight loss.

LAGB

The LAGB is performed under general anesthesia and involves placing a silicone band around the upper portion of the stomach. This creates a small pouch that can only hold a small portion of food. This procedure works by limiting the amount of food you can eat and by slowing the flow rate of food from the upper part of the stomach into the lower part of the stomach, letting you feel full sooner and that feeling last longer.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

The sleeve gastrectomy is performed under general anesthesia and involves removing a portion of the stomach. The remaining stomach is about the size of a banana. The sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure, meaning it limits the amount a person can consume at one time. The person takes in less calories to feel full, thus resulting in weight loss.

Gastric Bypass

The gastric bypass procedure is performed under general anesthesia and involves creating a small pouch out of the upper stomach and bypassing the upper intestine. This surgery works in two ways: the restriction of the amount of food taken in as well as a small amount of malabsorption, meaning excessive calories are not absorbed but eliminated through your stool.

Robotic Bariatric Surgery

Robotic Bariatric Surgery involves using the da Vinci® System. Surgery is performed through just a few small incisions, much like laparoscopic surgery. The features of the da Vinci® System allow your surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, agility and control.
